Many homes in West Kildonan had vinyl siding installed over the original wood or stucco in the 80s and 90s. That vinyl is now 30 to 40 years old — well past its expected lifespan. The panels are fading unevenly, warping on south-facing walls, and in some cases cracking from impact or brittleness. Underneath, the original wall materials are often in rough shape because problems were covered up instead of fixed during the original re-side.
The other common issue is fascia. Most of these homes were built with wood fascia boards that were painted but never wrapped in aluminum. After decades of exposure, the paint has failed and the wood is softening. Once the fascia starts rotting, the eavestroughs lose their support and water starts going places it shouldn’t.
